27 - Cracks in the Ice

Our story is now rapidly approaching an incredibly important series of events: the Revolutions of 1848.  In a single year, a series of  revolutions swept across Europe, occurring in France, Prussia, Austria, Italy, the German states, and others. While timing like that might make it seem as though the revolutions were a carefully laid plan by a European-wide conspiracy, they were mostly spontaneous uprisings. They fed off each other’s energy and momentum, definitely, but there was no force behind the scenes coordinating things. What is perhaps even more remarkable, however, is that two years later, most of Europe would look largely the same as it had before the revolutions, at least superficially. Download Episode 27

Hi I really like your show and thought this overview was great for context. As a German living in the US I would like to point out something that I notice quite frequently when discussing history. The existence of the German eastern provinces are mostly diminished, just so in this potcast where they were referee to as "some other small areas" during the discussion about what counted as Germany at the time. Even though they comprize about half of todays Poland.
I don't blame you almost every history book written in English diminishes their importance and I might be a little sensitive because my family is from there. Nevertheless the show is about Italy and I have learned a great deal through it, thank you and keep up the good work.

Hi Moxx,

Thanks for your comment, we're glad you like the show! You're right that eastern Germany tends to get ignored. Our only excuse is that the eastern German areas don't play much of a role in our Italian story, and we didn't want to confuse people by introducing a lot of geography. At the same time, maybe we should have been a little more specific than "some other small areas".

Germany in this era is a fascinating topic in itself, and maybe someday (not any time soon) I'll have time to do a podcast on the German Unification.

Thanks!
