In this episode we're going to cover the first three months of 1848 in Italy. Sicily will kick off the year with a revolution, followed by a smaller one on the mainland. Then, like a chain of dominoes, almost all of the rulers in Italy will be forced by public pressure to grant constitutions. I have not yet listened to episode 31 but I noticed on this one that you mentioned something about laws that restricted the religious freedoms of Jews but no mention of Protestands. Were there no restrictions on them? I thought there were.

Hi Lisa!

I didn't actually use the word Protestant (so I can see how you might have missed it), but I did say that in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Papal States only Catholics were allowed to be full citizens, and that in the latter Jews were specifically exclude. So, Protestants weren't welcome, but the Jews were especially unwelcome.

As far as I know, there wasn't a particularly large Protestant community in the south of Italy, while there was a small but long-established Jewish population, especially in the major cities like Rome.
