51 - The End

We've come to the end of the series - this will be the last episode of our story. I'd like to spend this episode addressing some of the big questions that the series raised:
First, was unification inevitable?
Second, was the incorporation of Southern Italy into the new Italian state a result of conquest or unification?
And third, what was the legacy of the three men we focused on: Cavour, Garibaldi, and Mazzini?

Then I'll wrap up with a few closing remarks and say goodbye.

Thanks for your lovely message! I've considered doing more episodes, but I simply don't have the time anymore. I'll post something on the podcast feed if I ever do start something again, though!

I simply want to add my thanks as a professional historian (of Germany and France, mostly) for all your excellent work with this program!

Thanks, that's very kind of you! What era of German history? What do you think of the comparison between Cavour and Bismarck?

Mostly post 1871 German history, so just neatly missing the period you so ably discussed! Listening to the podcast, the comparison of Cavour and Bismarck really did seem apt: your readings brought me to realize that both were singularly able to straddle or braid together domestic and foreign policy (for lack of a cleaner phrase) in a way that allowed each their respective dominance. Not that failures or, indeed, micro-managing hindered this; indeed, perhaps the genius of their style of governance meant that both Bismarck and Cavour could lean in one direction as necessary--and perhaps personally, too.

You and your listeners may enjoy listening to this interview with Jonathan Steinberg on the publication of his 2011 biography of Bismarck, incidentally (or indeed reading the book, which I can heartily recommend): https://newbooksnetwork.com/jonathan-steinberg-bismarck-a-life-oxford-up-2011-3/.

So again, bravo! And hope you take up another project like this one day off in the future.

Congratulations on a fantastic series. I was a complete novice to Italian history despite being half Italian and found this series before a trip to Italy to visit family. I could not have found you both more interesting and engaging with your delivery of this fascinating topic. Loved the perspectives you provided about the time period and especially the effort you made to give context to the events happening in Italy (or I should say the states that would one day make up Italy). Thank you very much for all your time and effort and I could not be more pleased to have stumbled across your amazing series.

I finished the series on Risorgimento!!! I loved it!!! It was an absolute adventure!!! I especially liked what you said about how it would make perfect sense for someone to look around at concepts like democracy and constitutions and seeing the violent revolutions done, see them as a threat and dangerous. Also, what did the uniforms of the Italian army after unification look like?

Thanks so much for the nice comment, we're glad you like the show! I'm afraid I have no idea what the uniforms looked like, sorry!
